Alter-Ego #1 (Incomplete) Fanzine (1961). Legendary as Alter-Ego #1 (Incomplete) Fanzine (1961).
Alter-Ego #1 (Incomplete) Fanzine (1961). Legendary as the very first purely comics-related fanzine to hit the mails (though it was almost a dead heat with Don and Maggie Thompson's Comic Art #1), Alter-Ego was the brainchild of Dr. Jerry G. Bails, with an able assist from future Marvel head honcho Roy Thomas. This is an incomplete copy, which was mailed out by Jerry Bails as a promotional item to try and get more people to subscribe. In fact, there is a pencil notation on the second page reading "Dear Jim, This is a complimentary copy of the 1st issue , which was published last April 1st. The 2nd issue will be ready in June. I'm sorry that this copy is incomplete and out of date, but you can see whether or not you want the next issue. Bestest, Jerry." This copy contains the first fourteen pages of the original twenty. Unfortunately, it is missing the delightful "Bestest League of America" spoof strip, which was written and drawn by Roy Thomas, who also drew the cover. The overall condition is VG, with the cover having numerous small tears and creases, and rust on the staple. This magazine is not listed in Overstreet.
