1875-80 - A view from a hillside outside of the town, this stereoview shows a large plume of smoke issuing forth from a mill site hidden from view. There are what appear to be tailings ponds in the center of the photo and beyond that are numerous wooden structures backed by pine trees. This is a reprint published by the Continent Stereoscopic Company featuring Descriptive Views of the American Continent. Founded in 1873, the town is the highest incorporated town in America at 10,578 feet. At the height of the mining heyday, the mines produced over $1,500,000 in minerals annually. Some of their colorful names include the Orphan Boy Mine, Dolly Varden Mine, Sweet Home Mine, Little Daisy Mine, and London Mine. The town is still active today as a tourist stopover with a current population of approximately 275 residents [Ref: townofalma.com/].
