Allen & Wheelock Rare Lipfire Navy Revolver
Featured in this lot is a rare Allen & Wheelock lipfire Navy revolver chambered in .36 caliber. Ethan Allen first granted a patent for his .44 cal lipfire revolver in 1861, but was only able to manufacture revolvers till 1863, when he got a patent infringement cease and desist in 1863. The restrictions were later released when the opposing patent expired in 1869, allowing Allen to produce more lipfire revolvers. The Navy model was the first .36 cartridge revolver until the Rollin White patent expired and Colt's model conversion. The revolvers were later converted to fire rimfire cartridges by machining the rear cylinder face flat as the lipfire ammunition dwindled. This revolver displays a six-shot rim fire cylinder, 3 1/4" long octagonal barrel, walnut grips, and lever operated ejector. The barrel is marked across the side in faded lettering "Allen & Wheelock Worcester Mass Allen Pat's Sept. 7. 1858". The revolver features its unique trigger guard lever action ejector across the bottom and side of the barrel. The pistol shows fair condition mechanically, with parts needing repair or replaced for full functionality. The revolver shows good condition overall. with some wear, pitting, and patina due to age. Serial Number: 167. This firearm qualifies as an antique and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.
