American diplomat and lawyer who became the first civilian director of the CIA (1893–1969). Signed book: The Secret Surrender. First British edition. London: Weidenfeld and Nicolson, 1967. Hardcover with dust jacket, 5.75 x 8.75, 268 pages. Signed and inscribed on the first free end page in blue ballpoint, "To Earl Alexander of Tunis, with the admiration of the author and appreciation for all you did to make 'Operation Sunrise' a success. Allen W. Dulles, 3 March 1967, Washington, D.C." In fine condition, with a crudely tape-repaired tear to the front of the dust jacket. 'Operation Sunrise' refers to a series of secret negotiations led by Dulles between Nazi Germany and the Western Allies to arrange a surrender of German forces in northern Italy; it was Field Marshal Harold Alexander that ultimately secured the surrender, and he is mentioned numerous times throughout the book. A superb association piece.
