All Original U.S. Model 1855 Springfield Percussion Pistol-Carbine with Matching Stock
This fine example of a Model 1855 Pistol-Carbine was manufactured at Springfield Armory in 1856. The pistol-carbine has the original attachable stock, two-leaf folding rear sight and Maynard tape primer. The nipple bolster has a removable clean-out screw. The steel swivel ramrod has a concave button tip. The buttcap has a steel eye-bolt for a lanyard ring. The barrel, lock and backstrap are 'National Armory Bright" and the forend tip, barrel band, trigger guard and buttcap are brass. The pistol stock is oil-finished black walnut. The attachable stock is oil-finished black walnut with a brass yoke and buttplate and fitted with a sling swivel. The lock and barrel tang are both dated "1856". The forward edge of the lock plate is marked "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" in two lines. The Springfield Eagle and Shield motif is roll-stamped on the tape-primer door. The left barrel flat is stamped with "V/P/Eagle Head" proof and inspection marks. A rectangular Ordnance final inspection mark with script initials is stamped on the left stock flat. The assembly number "14" is stamped on the buttcap below the junction with the backstrap. The top of the stock yoke is also stamped with the number "14" and "5" is stamped on the lower tang. The heel of the stock buttplate is stamped "U.S.". The Model 1855 Pistol-Carbine was a unique design that was issued in limited numbers to the Dragoon and Cavalry regiments prior to the Civil War and remained in service with volunteer cavalry units during the early part of the war.

Gauge: 58 percussion

Grips:
Serial Number: 14
Condition: Fine. The pistol-carbine is all original. The barrel, lock, backstrap and swivel ramrod have a silver-gray patina with scattered age discoloration. There is flash pitting on the bolster, barrel and adjacent portions of the lock plate and edge of the primer door. The brass furniture on the pistol and attachable stock has an attractive age patina. The Maynard tape primer is complete and functional. The pistol stock and attachable stock are both in fine condition with moderate handling wear. The handling marks on the pistol and stock match very close (as they have been together always). The Eagle and Shield on the primer door is sharp. The lock and barrel markings are clear. The Ordnance final inspection mark on the left side of the stock is fine. This is a fine example of a Model 1855 Pistol-Carbine that would be a key addition to any U.S. martial arms collection.
