Alice Cary Manuscript Poem and Edwin Markham Manuscript Poem,<p>lot of 2. Includes the last stanza of "Lincoln, Man of the People" in Markham's hand, signed and dated April 1925. Framed under glass with 6 x 8.5" visible. PLUS Markham became a voice for the laborer after publication of "The Man with the Hoe" in 1899. The success prompted an invitation to write a commemorative poem for Lincoln's birthday in 1900, which Markham read again at the dedication of the Lincoln Memorial in 1922. PLUS the last stanza of "Life's Mystery," in Cary's hand, signed and dated New York, March 1864. Framed under glass with approx. 3 x 5" visible. Alice was born 26 April 1820 in Mt. Healthy, near Cincinnati, OH. Always conscious of being from the "provinces," in 1850 she and her sister, Phoebe, moved to New York to be closer to the literary "heart" of America.<p>1st has light, even toning, possibly mounting material on verso. 2nd with folds, toning around edges of mat. Neither removed from frame for examination.
