Companion of writer Gertrude Stein who wrote about their life together in What Is Remembered (1877–1967). ALS signed “Alice,” one page, 5.25 x 8, personal letterhead, February 21, 1959. Letter to Saul Mauraker. In part: “Do you know how beautiful I think your handwriting is? And how illegible?…I forgive you everything and there is nothing to forgive as Gertrude said…I hope Carl hasn’t told you what a horrid book has been written about Gertrude by the man who wrote Dylan Thomas in America.” In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Toklas’s hand. The book Toklas refers to in the letter is The Third Rose: Gertrude Stein and Her World by literary critic John Malcolm Brinnin.
