Companion of writer Gertrude Stein who wrote about their life together in What Is Remembered (1877–1967). ALS signed “Alice Toklas,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.25 x 8, March 25, 1948. Letter to actor Fredd Wayne. In part: “Of course I remember you and how very much Gertrude Stein and I enjoyed the excellent performance…It was really excruciatingly funny and artistic—a very rare combination…Here the young people—that is those who are connected with the arts—are more cheerful than one sees much reason for their being. The immediate future is not brilliant for France…I must tell you that a few weeks ago a friend took me to the Marigny Theatre to see a marvelous performance of…Moliere’s Don Juan…even if you don’t understand French, you might read the play in English.” In fine condition, with a small area of ink erosion above the signature. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, filled out in Toklas’s hand.
