British naturalist, explorer, geographer, anthropologist, and biologist (1823–1913) who independently conceived the theory of evolution by natural selection. AQS on a gray sheet of Old Orchard stationery, signed “Alfred R. Wallace, August 26th, 1909.” Wallace writes, in full: “So long as a single willing worker suffers want, or has his life shortened by preventable causes, we cannot claim to be a civilized people.” In fine condition, with toning along the left edge barely impinging on the writing.
