Union general (1824–1897). Pleasanton commanded a division of the Cavalry Corps in the Antietam, Fredricksburg and Chancellorsville campaigns. Promoted to major general in June of 1863, he took over command of the Cavalry Corps and directed 10,000 Federal horsemen in the battle of Brandy Station, Virginia, the biggest cavalry fight of the Civil War.
