Alfred Pizzey Newton, RWS (1830-1883), The Helmsdale River, Sutherland, with sheep and a farmstead in the foreground, signed and dated lower left "Alfred P Newton 1857", watercolour, 71 x 34cm *Alfred Pizzey Newton was commissioned by Queen Victoria to paint a highland scene as a wedding present for her daughter, the Princess Royal in 1858. In the same year, Ruskin wrote of Newton: "Let Mr Newton but draw all the four sides of Ben Nevis as he has done this one, and nobody need ever go to the mountain again for the mere sake of seeing what it is like" £400-500
