French-American soldier (1833-1880) and diplomat who served in the Crimean War and the American Civil War; he was captured by John S. Mosby's guerrillas in 1864 and spent the rest of the war as a prisoner in Danville. Civil War-dated ALS signed “A. N. Duffie,” one page both sides, 7.75 x 10, June 25, 1863. Written from Washington, a letter to Col. J. C. Kelton, in full: "I have the honor to make application for leave of absence for six days for the purpose of visiting Rhode Island; I am desirous of obtaining this leave to enable me to fill up the thinned ranks of the regiment which I formerly commanded (1st Rhode Island cav'y) & which I can accomplish in a short time by seeing personally the Governor of Rhode Island. In the late engagements I lost horses & personal property, these necessaries, I wish to replace & state this as another reason for requesting leave of absence. I reported to Gen'l Hooker yesterday stating the above facts; who instructed me to proceed to Alexandria & telegraph when I am ready to take command of my brigade." In fine condition, with tiny binding holes along the left edge.
