Oil on panel, framed. Featuring a landscape scene of the sea. Signed Manessier on the lower left corner. Attributed to Alfred Manessier (1911-1993, French). 17.5 x 15 cm (7.0 x 5.0 inches). Framed size: 30 x 24.5 cm (12.0 x 9.75 inches). This painting was possibly executed between 1952 and 1955, when the artist did a series of paintings of the North Sea, and the Bay of Somme, of which this may be of the latter. The scene shows calm waters with mists at sea just at the cusp of dawn. The artist also worked in stained glass, and you can see a hint of that in the pattern of the brilliant refractive yellow-orange light through the waves. This also adds a surreal touch to the realism. Manessier is known for his abstract work, and this is a rare, early example of his figurative painting. PROVENANCE: Private American collection (Illinois)
