Confederate general (1827–1892) who fought at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg, and later served as governor of North Carolina. Civil War–era ALS signed “A. M. Scales,” one page both sides, 6.5 x 8, no date. Letter to “His Excellency Gov. Clarke,” presumably North Carolina Governor Henry Toole Clark. In part: “Permit me, as a friend, and one who sincerely desires to see efficient officers, to recommend the names of two of your countrymen, Capt. Jos. Hyman & Dr. Fuqua…they are gentlemen of high character, of good military requirements, and their company by its thorough discipline and good training will prove all I have said. In a word, they are fully entitled to your confidence and deserve to be noticed by the State.” The second integral page is professionally inlaid into a larger off-white sheet. A couple stains to edges and brushing to a single word in the text, otherwise fine condition. Joseph H. Hyman and Dr. J. A. Fuqua were both officers in the ‘Edgecombe Rifles,’ Company G of the 13th North Carolina.
