French military officer (1859–1935) whose central role in the Dreyfus Affair, which tore French society apart and shook their faith in the military, thrust him into the international spotlight. Author Emile Zola wrote his famous open letter, ‘J’Accuse!’ laying bare the entire affair. ALS in French, signed “A. Dreyfus,” one page, 4.75 x 6.5, October 7 (with the year 1919 noted in pencil in another hand). Dreyfus writes to the widow of author Emile Zola about attending an annual ceremony honoring Zola.
