Alfred Andriola - Original Comic Strip Art for
Alfred Andriola - Original Comic Strip Art for Charlie Chan Daily dated 5-4-?? (McNaught Syndicate, c.1938-42). Earl Derr Biggers' immortal oriental sleuth (modeled after a real detective in Honolulu named Chang Apana) has been a fixture of mystery novels, TV shows, movies, and comics for nearly 80 years, ever since the first part of "The House Without a Key" was published in The Saturday Evening Post on January 24, 1925. Hardcover publications by Bobbs-Merrill soon followed, and the legendary career of Charlie Chan was born. A unique (for the time) positive portrayal of a Chinese detective in an era rife with ethnic slurs and stereotypes, Chan was an instant hit. Several additional novels followed in subsequent years, with the first movie, "Charlie Chan Carries On," starring Warner Oland, released in 1931. Chan's popularity was so great that he even survived the death of his creator in 1933. Over the next 16 years, numerous Chan movies would be released, the earliest starring Oland, and later Sidney Toler and Roland Winters. Chan also had a brief newspaper comic strip career, with his feature running between 1938 and 1942. Art was provided by the talented Alfred Andriola, a former assistant to Milton Caniff on Terry and the Pirates. Jerry Weist, in his Comic Art Price Guide, Second Edition says, "Charlie Chan is very well drawn (heavy Caniff and Sickles influence) and originals are almost non-existent." The example offered here measures approximately 22.25" x 5.75" overall, and is in excellent condition. There is an inscription in the top margin which reads, "From Charlie Chan and Alfred Andriola." The title of the strip, "Don't give up the ship," is also noted. The piece is signed by the artist in the first panel. Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
