Alfonso Ferri De Sclopetorum sive Archibusorum Alfonsi Ferrii's [I]De Sclopetorum sive Archibusorum
Alfonsi Ferrii's De Sclopetorum sive Archibusorum Vulneribus. Eiusdem de caruncula sive callo quae cervici vesicae innascuntur. A first edition of this second ever monograph on gunshot wounds (after Paré). (Romæ: apud Valerium et Aloysium Doricòs Fratres, 1552), iii, 132 pages, 4 pgs contents, five-line decorative dropcaps at chapter headings, woodcuts of instruments in text, marbled boards with library sticker on spine, 12mo (5.5" x 7.5"), Biblioteca Apostolioa Vaticana library stamp. Ferri was the first to deal with wounds from heavy guns and he invented a surgical instrument called an "alphonsin" for removing bullets. He did, though, perpetuate the already disproven notion that gunshot wounds were poisonous. The second treatise included in this volume is on fleshy growths on the cervix of the bladder and would be of particular interest to students of urology. Some damp staining, four pages starting, else a very nice copy. Two landmark medical texts in one volume. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.
