Stephens pens a quote from Epistle 4 of ‘An Essay of Man,’ a philosophical poem written by Alexander Pope. In full: “Honor and Shame from no condition rise, Act well your part there all the honor lies.’ Alexander H Stephens, MC of Ga, National Hotel, Washington DC, 2-April 1882.” In fine condition, with some scattered light soiling and mounting remnants on reverse.
