Alexander Stephens. Vice President of C
Alexander Stephens. Vice President of Confederacy, Member of Congress before and after Civil War; refused his Senate seat in 1866. A.L.S., 3 pp., from his home town Crawfordsville, Ga., July 19th; top right corner missing, lacking year and a few words of text; to "Lilly." Charming personal letter from one of important statesmen of the Confederacy, reminiscing of years ago. "Your long exceedingly interesting and most highly appreciative letter of 13th last was received...It carried me back to the days when you were a...little girl whose cheerful and beaming eyes and charming 'Flowers' produced upon my mind...a soothing and quieting composure...." Mentions his Christian principles: "Some of the best people I ever met were members of the Catholic Church...I quoted not because he is a Catholic but because of their very great merit...I am not able to say more to you today. Hope you will write me often. Remember me to your Father and Mother and to your sister Ida...I now expect she is nearly grown! What changes a few years effect!...Yours truly, Alexander Stephens." Evidence of mounting along edge of left margin, else very good.
