Union General (1831–1903) who was courtmartialed and partially blamed for the Union disaster at Chickamauga. Uncommon original 4 x 6.5 cabinet photo of McCook and his staff posing on a porch in Washington, D. C., by an anonymous studio, signed vertically in the right border in black ink, “A. McD. McCook, Maj Genl US Vols.” Reverse bears notations in an unknown hand which read, “Genl. A. McDowell McCook & Staff at Washington D.C. July 1864 while commanding the defenses at Wash against the attack of Genl. Jubal Early CSA who was repulsed. Other notations identify several of McCook’s staff. Reverse also bears an affixed caption. Some scattered light toning and foxing, small numbers added under image in an unknown hand, and some light surface wear and crazing, otherwise fine condition. Early was responsible for McCook receiving another command as he was threatening Washington with attack. The day the battle ended, so did McCook’s command.
