This very heavy percussion 8 gauge shotgun was the type used by market hunters to kill large quantities of birds with one shot. Most makers along the major flyways made these guns. This particular shotgun was made by Alexander Mc Comas of Baltimore, Maryland. The top of the barrel at the breech is marked "ALEXANDER Mc COMAS 51 S CALVERT ST BALTIMORE." and the lock is marked "ALEXANDER Mc COMAS". The barrel is round with 12 1/2" of the breech end octagon , it has a single brass bead sight and a solid iron under rib with a massive wooden ramrod with brass tip secured by two iron pipes. The shotgun is mounted with a checkered straight grip half-stock with a horn forend tip and flat iron buttplate, with a 4 3/4" heel tang. Brown barrel and casehardened remaining parts.

Condition: Very good. The barrel retains a third of the original brown finish mixed mostly with smooth brown patina. There are traces of original dark case colors and some original casehardening pattern remaining with the balance having a smooth mottled brown patina. The stock is also very good with some minor overall scattered dents, dings and scratches, with the checkering remaining crisp. The markings are readable. Mechanically fine.
