This lovely Greek coin (Macedonian Kingdom) is a silver drachm of approximately 18MM in diameter, made between 336-323 BC, the time of Alexander the Great. The obverse, facing forward, depicts Herakles (a reference to Alexander's family's claim of descent for the hero) wearing the Nemean Lion's scalp as a helmet. As years passed, the images became widely regarded as portraits of Alexander. The reverse shows a full figure Zeus. The coin is set in a modern 14K mounting, its overall diameter in mounting is 22.5MM and it weighs 5.7 grams.
