American landscape painter who studied in Cincinnati and in Germany. He was influenced by Inness, who became his friend. Wyant achieved distinction for his subtle, delicate treatment of scenes in the Adirondacks and Catskills and of peaceful rural landscapes. He is best represented in the Metropolitan Museum, which has several of his paintings. Rare ALS signed “A.H. Wyant,” one onion skin page, 8 x 10, New York letterhead, December 16, 1866. In part: “Dear Parents - I must write a line to tell you how lonesome and almost homesick I have been part of the time today. It has snowed furiously all day. I sat down, smoked my pipe, thought of all my old sweethearts, of hunting and fishing, of log rollings, of singing school, our ride to Waterloo, then I had to think about Andrew with his soldier clothes on - then of the war - of the rebel’s daughter that I thought so much of and who is now in a convent in Paris…of not being able to see her and so on, etc. You know what a lot of old rusty memories one can pick out of the brain’s ash heaps when they’re alone on such days…I am in a hurry to get done, that I may come home to you. I wish I could stay at home all winter. I am delighted that Mattie is going home at Christmas. I’m afraid I’ll not be able to send you money every time I write.
