<B>Alexander Hamilton Letter Signed "</B></I><B><I>A Hamilton</B></I></B></I><B>" as Secretary of the Treasury. </B></I> One page, 7.25" x 8.75", "<I>Treasury Department</B></I>" [Philadelphia], September 13, 1792. A circular letter requesting information from an unknown federal official in order to compile a report on expenditures to the Senate: "<I>...By an order of the Senate of the United States, dated 7th of May last, of which a Copy is enclosed</B></I> [not present]<I>, it is requested of the Secretary of the Treasury to lay before them...a statement of the Salaries , fees & emoluments for one year ending the first of Octo</B></I>[ber] <I>next, to be stated quarterly, of every person holding any civil office or employment under the United States (except the Judges) and of the actual disbursements & expenses in the discharge of their respective offices and employments for the same period...</B></I>" The information requested was for but one of several reports Hamilton was composing for the Congress, most notably his <I>magnum opus, </B></I>the Report on Manufactures, which advocated federal support and protection of industry -- helping inflame one of the key sectional controversies between North and South that would continue to the Civil War. Tear at wax seal resulting in paper loss, otherwise excellent.
