Stephens Signed <I>Constitution of the United States</B></I></B></I> <I>of America with the Amendments Thereto: to which are added Jefferson's Manual of Parliamentary Practice...,</B></I> his own copy. (Washington: Government Printing Office, 1876). An amazing piece of Americana. Alexander H. Stephens, former Confederate United States of America Vice President and post war U.S. Congressman inscribes a copy of "The Constitution of the U.S.A" -including Thomas Jefferson's Manual of Parliamentary Practice. A Congressman from Georgia before the war, Stephens was the Confederate Vice President, though he originally opposed secession. After the war, he was elected Senator, but was not allowed to take his seat. He was later re-elected to Congress and was Governor of Georgia. He also wrote <I>A Constitutional View of the Late War Between the States.</B></I> <BR><BR>Stephens inscribes and signs the fly-leaf which reads, "<I>Presented by Alexander H. Stephens to his young & highly esteemed friend, Charles N. Ironsides. National Hotel, Washington D.C. 26 Dec. 1876.</B></I>" This was Stephens' own copy with his name printed in gold on the front cover. Some wear to the morocco covers.
