Scottish bacteriologist (1881–1955) who shared the 1945 Nobel Prize in Medicine for his role in the discovery and isolation of penicillin. ALS, one page, 5.5 x 8.5, The Wright-Fleming Institute of Microbiology letterhead, November 3, 1949. The scientist writes a colleague regarding the loss of Fleming’s wife. In part: “It is indeed a wrench to lose a companion of 34 years but it had to be.” In fine condition, with scattered wrinkling. Accompanied by an unsigned photo. A heartfelt yet still analytical response from a man whose work saved countless lives.
