Physicist and surveyor (1806–1867) who helped engineer coastal fortifications and conducted a detailed survey of the entire east coast. Also the great-grandson of Benjamin Franklin. Four ALSs, each signed “A. D. Bache,” one page, 4.75 x 7.5 to 8 x 10, dated between 1833 and 1853. Writing to meteorologist Ebenezer Meriam, Bache comments on a contract to remove a rock from a harbor, the loss of a great philanthropist, and defraying expenses, among other topics. In overall fine condition, with intersecting folds and areas of toning and soiling to most letters.
