Innovative American sculptor (1898–1976) best known for devising the mobile, the form with which he was most closely associated. Calder also produced large-scale, immobile abstract sculptures known as stabiles, many of which were designed for public spaces. Uncommon ALS, one page, 8.5 x 11, blindstamped personal letterhead, May 31, 1938. Letter to art historian Alexander Dorner (1893–1957). In part: “I was very much chagrined to miss meeting you at Russell Hitchcock’s, and to miss your lecture. I have been hearing about you from the Sweeneys and from Gabo, too. And if you should come this way again I would very much like to have you come to see us, and spend the night, if that fits in with your schedule.” Until 1936, Dorner was the director of the Hanover Museum. In 1937, he emigrated to the United States, where he was director of the museum at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI, from 1938 until 1941. It was here that he taught at the university until 1948, when he moved to Bennington College in Vermont. Intersecting mailing folds, a couple lightly affecting signature, a mild shade of toning, and a few small edge tears and creases, otherwise fine condition. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
