Oil on Canvas 401/2 X 751/2 in. 103 X 192 cm - $75,000-90,000 Provenance Probably acquired in the early 19th century by Dr. Joseph Carlyle and thence by descent; sold Christie's London, 13 December 1996, lot 233. The third son of the landscape painter Peeter Van Bredael (1629-1719), Alexander Bredael trained in his father's studio before going on to be made master of the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke in 1685. He subsequently taught the portrait painter Peeter Snyers (1681-1752) and the painter of genre scenes Jan Baptist Govaerts (1701-1746). Bredael is most well known for his paintings of contemporary religious pr0cessions and secular festivals of which the present work is a notable example. Signed examples of his work are in the Musée des Beaux-arts, Lille 'Procession at Anvers', and the Musée des Beaux-arts, Nancy 'A Farm Interior' and A View of the Alter in the Place de Meir, Antwerp'. The Ommegang in Antwerp is still celebrated as a religious festival. Taking place on 15 August, the festival has its origins in the middle ages and originally was organised in two parts. The first celebrated the assumption of the Virgin whereas the second was a secular event in the course of which the town guilds were represented by a procession of floats through the streets of Antwerp. The guilds took particular pride in their contributions and there was considerable rivalry to provide the most splendid display.
