Alex Toth (attributed) - Green Lantern #39 Unpublished Splash Page 1 Original Art (DC, circa 1949). The Underworld has its own trade paper and the Golden Age Green Lantern has made front page news in "The Criminal Call." Issue #38 was the last published issue of the original Green Lantern's title; this splash was slated for the never-published #39. Green Lantern was bound, gagged, and thrown from the WXYZ radio tower, but it's certain that the emerald gladiator was somehow able to escape this death trap. Alex Toth made leaps and bounds in developing his skills as a cartoonist while working on the Green Lantern character under the watchful eyes of editor Sheldon Mayer. In the Amazing World of DC Comics Toth recalled, "Shelly opened my eyes to the wonders of economy, the bare truth of less is more, and helped me see the strength, courage, and the beauty of the unadorned honest line which can stand alone." The image area of the art is 12.5" x 18". Unlike other "written off" pages from DC, this spectacular splash was not cut apart, and is in Excellent condition.
