Alex Schomburg - Original Cover Art for Human Torch Comics #16 (Timely, 1945). Every collectible field has its rarities, those pieces that are so scarce as to be almost legendary. Stamp collectors lust after the One-Cent 1856 Penny Magenta of British Guiana, with only one copy known to exist. Numismatists pine for the 1933 Double Eagle gold coin (only one exists outside the Smithsonian's vaults) which recently brought over $7 million at auction. For comic art collectors, the Holy Grail would have to be this, the only original Timely cover by the legendary Alex Schomburg to survive the ravages of time. Known for his insane levels of detail, Schomburg shows the Torch and his boy companion, Toro, blazing through the Tokio Oil refinery, while taking out a few Japanese gunners and battleships for good measure. The piece is alive with action, with hardly a square inch of paper untouched by Schomburg's busy brush. A masterful artist, it was Schomburg's covers that, in large part, helped to define the Timely books of the war years, and made them some of the hottest sellers of the day. Not to be left out of the action, Namor, the Avenging Son, strangles a Japanese soldier in an inset in the lower left. In superb condition, the image area on this astounding piece measures approximately 13.25" x 20" and is rendered in pen and ink on Bainbridge board. The title logo is a recreated stat, but everything else is purely original. There has been some slight conservation performed on this piece, including a small piece replaced to the lower right corner, affecting approximately a 1" x 1.5" area of art, a light cleaning, and the removal of a small amount of whiteout, with the consequent touch-up of some small areas of black. Fortunately, this conservation has ensured that this landmark piece of art will survive for future generations to gaze upon in awe and wonder. Not only a great piece of art, this is also a stunning piece of comics history that may never again be offered for public sale.
