Esteemed American cartoonist (1909–1956) best known as the creator of the strips Flash Gordon, Jungle Jim, and Rip Kirby. Group of four items signed by Raymond: a glossy 10 x 8 photo of Raymond at work with pen in hand, signed and inscribed in fountain pen, "To Kenneth Browne—His friend, Alex Raymond"; an ink signature and inscription, "My best regards to Kenny Browne from his friend—Alex Raymond"; and two TLSs, both signed "Alex Raymond," each one page, 1947 and 1948. In the first, Raymond writes: "I gave up Flash Gordon and Jungle Jim when I received a commission in the United States Marine Corps, in February 1944. While overseas, I did a great deal of thinking about my work and came to the conclusion that if, and when, I ever returned to civilian life, I would prefer to do a more realistic feature. To my mind, my present vehicle, Rip Kirby, depicts the life and thought of its time better than anything I have attempted. It was not easy to give up Flash and Jim but an artist must be true, first of all, to himself." In very good to fine condition, with scattered light creasing to the photo. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope for one of the letters.
