LaFountain, Alex. 1923-1971. Chippewa Cree lived at Lewistown, Montana. Well known for his paintings and especially his bronzes in the Native American genre. Owned his own foundry. Died tragically in 1971, the same year this bronze was cast, when riding an air mattress on the Missouri River near Great Falls. Spotted a swimmer in distress and drowned when attempting to save him. Highly regarded and widely collected; his bronzes are rare. Purchased by Scotty Zion at CMR Art Auction ca. 1970s to 1980s.
