Alex Katz is famous for his large-scale and almost stereotyped portraits. However, far less common and yet incredibly poetic are his flower paintings that he creates since the time around the turn of the millennium
In the past, Alex Katz has continually collaborated with poets and writers. The present etching is part of a series of 13 works that were published alongside the poem ‘Edges’ by the great American poet Robert Creeley. In contrast to the traditional practice, the illustrations were not created for are an already existing test, but it was rather Creeley who wrote his poem in response to the art of Alex Katz.
The etching is signed with pencil lower left ‘Alex Katz’ and numbered with pencil lower right ‘9/30’. The sheet is verso mounted at two points on a cardboard. The plate size is 27.5 x 21.4 cm and the size of the sheet is 38 x 31.6 cm. The framed work measures 42.2 x 35.9 cm.
Alex Katz (b. 1927)
Alex Katz was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1927. Between 1946 and 1949, he studied at the Cooper Union in New York, which was followed by further artistic training at the reknown Skowhegan School of painting and sculpture in Maine. In 1954, the Roko Gallery in New York organized his first exhibition. Since then, his works were presented in more than 200 solo exhibitions worldwide, including a major retrospective at the Albertina in Vienna in 2010. Katz received a number of honors for his artistic achievements and was awarded the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy Museum’ in 2007. Alex Katz lives and works in New York. (cbo)
