Screen print in in five colors on Arches paper, titled "Sunset: Lake Wesserunsett 2", 1972. Floating in the frame, number 41 out of an edition of 60, and signed in the lower right. Katz is an American figurative painter, known for his large-scale simplified images of family and friends. He created iconic paintings which documented the American scene and landscapes which offered monumental glimpses of the ordinary world. Gallery label on back. Katz was born in Queens, New York, and studied at Cooper Union and did plein air painting in Skowhegan, Maine. He was inspired by the Japanese woodcuts of Kitagawa Utagaro, and his paintings show flatness of color and form, economy of line, and a cool, but seductive emotional detachment. His works are known worldwide, and a screen print titled “Sunset: Lake Wesserunsett 1” is held at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.
