Rare series of manuscripts by Alex Haley, with copious editing in his own hand. Lot includes four revisions of Haley’s autobiographical short story “Search” dated 11 March 1978, 18 March, 21 March and the last which was shipped to his publisher with a courier receipt dated 22 March 1978. The top copy of this courier receipt had been signed by Haley, resulting in the impression of his signature on the carbon copy included in this lot. The final version of the 38 page short story reads in part: ''Grandpa was the greatest man I knew. He was tall and black, he had a fine, thick moustache, and he stood as straight as any tree.'' The original first draft of the same passage reads “Grandpa was the greatest man I knew. I mean Dad was great in a Dad way but Grandpa was just different. Maybe it was because it took longer to be a Grandpa. Different times.” Story centers upon Haley's relationship with his grandparents and his early childhood in Henning, Tennessee. In addition to the four drafts of the manuscript on loose paper, a final non-commercial bound copy (probably for Mr. Haley’s personal use) is present. A fascinating inside look into the creative process of one of the most pivotal American authors of the 20th century.
