Alessandro Petronio's Del Viver Delli Romani, et di Conservar la Sanita. (Rome: Domenico Basa, 1592), first edition in Italian, 416 pages plus index, beige period vellum, banded on spine, 8vo (7" x 9"). Originally published in Latin in 1581, this is the Italian translation of Petronio's De victu Romanorum, a translation never seen by its author. Petronio died in 1585 after practicing medicine in Rome for over 60 years, but left to posterity this wonderful guide to the social life of Renaissance Rome, including passages on local rituals, customs, diet, and hygiene. Petronio is especially fond of food and wine, going into great detail on sparkling wine and the proper methods of fermentation. Considering it is over 400 years old, this copy of Del Viver Delli Romani is good, with some wear to the edges, creases and slight staining on the vellum. Spine shows noticeable wear. Scattered writing on endpapers and title page, but overall this is a delightful piece of 16th century history.
