Albert Smith Autograph Letter Signed “A. Smith”. One page, 4.75” x 8”, February 14, 1843? . An interesting letter concerning the payment of a fine incurred by General Andrew Jackson incurred after the battle of New Orleans in 1814. Jackson put the city under marshal law, ruling with an overly strong hand, going so far as to banish a local judge who objected to the situation. After civil law was re-established Jackson was fined. The matter appeared before Congress in 1844 and the fine was ordered repaid with interest. This letter may have been written in 1843 and reads in part: “…the bill providing for Genl Jackson's fine rejected in the Senate today - The Bill as reported from the House will probably pass - Good…”. The letter has the usual fold creases and the ink has run on certain letters, else very good condition.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
