Confederate general, killed early in the war at the Battle of Shiloh. Johnston was considered by Jefferson Davis to be the finest general in the Confederacy. Very rare ADS, signed “A. Sidney Johnston, Secretary of War,” one page, 8 x 10, June 4, 1839. Document written in his hand while serving as Secretary of War for the Republic of Texas. In full, “The 1st auditor will issue his draft on the Treasurer in favor of Col. W. G. Cooke Comy. & Qr. Master General for one thousand eight hundred & twelve dollars & 20/100 & charge the Qr. Master’s Department. To be paid out of the appropriation of $100,000 for expenses of the troops under the command of General T. J. Rusk.” Johnston held his position as Secretary of War for less than two years, resigning his post in 1840. In very good condition, with several small areas of ink erosion, including one in last name of signature, several light brushes to text, light mirroring of ink from another document previously resting atop this one, and some light toning and a small circular impression to top right. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
