Archive of papers related to the publication of Schweitzer’s book Goethe: Four Studies, translated by Charles R. Joy and released by the Beacon Press in 1949, totaling over 250 pages, including two pages with handwritten corrections by Schweitzer. Both pages with corrections are from German drafts of ‘Goethe als Denker und Mensch [Goethe as Thinker and Man],’ and have a few corrections; for example, on one page he adds, “Wenn der tiefe Geist Spinoza’s [If the deep spirit of Spinoza’s],” and on the other he crosses out “Leben [Life],” replacing it with “Denken [Thinking].” The other materials include: three carbon typescripts of “Goethe als Denker und Mensch,” and a mimeographed copy of the address as delivered; a typescript and carbon typescript of “Goethe A Memorial Address Delivered at the Celebration of the One Hundredth Anniversary of His Death”; a carbon typescript of “Albert Schweitzer on Goethe”; a typescript of “Goethe: Two Addresses by Albert Schweitzer”; two original mimeographed press releases; an unsigned carbon typed letter from Joy concerning his translations; and an unsigned booklet. In overall fine condition.
