Albert J. Beveridge: Abraham Lincoln 1809 - 1858
{Abraham Lincoln Albert J. Beveridge: Abraham Lincoln 1809 - 1858. (Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1928), standard library edition, four volumes, 1,349 total pages including Index, black tooled leather with decorative blind-stamping and gilt lettering on spine, front boards have small Lincoln cameo in gilt at center, deckled edges, top edge gilt, 8vo (6.5" x 9.5"), clear Mylar protective jackets. Republican Albert J. Beveridge was an historian and twice-elected United States Senator from Indiana in the early years of the twentieth century. When Theodore Roosevelt split from the Republican Party in 1912, forming the new Progressive Party, Beveridge went with him, though Beveridge would never again win public office. As a substitute, Beveridge turned to political scholarship, first penning a Pulitzer Prize-winning biography of Chief Justice John Marshall between 1916 and 1919, and then this biography of Abraham Lincoln. Beveridge's Abraham Lincoln was published posthumously in 1928 after he passed away shortly following a second major heart attack in 1927. Though Beveridge was never able to finish his Lincoln biography, his wife decided to have it published as a biography of Lincoln up to the time of his first presidential election. Upon publication, Abraham Lincoln 1809 - 1858 was considered one of the best biographies of Lincoln's early life. Following the publication of Beveridge's biography, William E. Barton, the leading Lincoln academic of the time, called the work "A Noble Fragment" of Lincoln scholarship, and described Beveridge's assessment of Lincoln's political skills as the "real contribution" of the book. Beveridge's masterwork is still held in high esteem by Lincoln scholars who appreciate his attempts to find the true Lincoln, the man behind the legend. The set is in very good condition, with lightly worn corners and very minimal wear to the edges and spine, mostly to the bottom edge. The Lincoln cameo on all four volumes shows minor rubbing just above Lincoln's ear. The protective tissue is present for all but two illustrations. A few of the illustrations show mild foxing and most of the illustrations display nominal offsetting, affecting only the tissue paper in most cases. Minimal wear can be seen at the spine fold of Volume I, and there is a thumbnail-sized chip of page 65 of that volume, not affecting any text. There is a miniscule faint damp-stain to the last few pages of Volume III and the first few pages of Volume IV, which also has very minimal foxing to a few pages. Overall, the interior text is beautiful, clean, and the binding is as tight as new. The set comes housed in two separate quarter leather slipcases (two volumes in each one). This gorgeous set of Beveridge's seminal biography of Lincoln stands fit for any book collection.

Shipping: Books & Catalogs (view shipping information)
