<B>Albert Gallatin, (1761-1849) Secretary of the Treasury under Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, Autograph Letter Signed,</B></I> "<I>Albert Gallatin</B></I>" as Secretary of the Treasury, two pages, 7.75" x 9.75", [Washington], April 23, 1805 to Thomas Rodney "<I>...and the other commissioners, &c Washington Mississippi Territory</B></I>" concerning elements of the reorganization of the Mississippi Territory following the Louisiana Purchase. Gallatin instructs the commissioners: "<I>It being provided by the 5th Section of the Act of March 27, 1804, that each of the Commissioners appointed to adjust the claims to lands in the Mississippi Territory west of Pearl River, shall be allowed six dollars for every day he shall attend on the Board after the last day of November 1804: it will be necessary.... [to] ascertain the number of days which each commissioner shall have this attended, and transmit the result... to this Office...</B></I>" The Pearl River became part of the western boundary of the Mississippi Territory when Jefferson acquired the Louisiana Territory in 1803.
