Amazing AQS, in German, signed “A. Einstein,” on the reverse of a pre-printed 4.5 x 7 thank-you card to his 50th-birthday felicitators dated March 14, 1929. Einstein writes (translated): “My plagiarism pray forgive, I cribbed from you, I will admit, Full of shame aside I go, And surrender to my foe.” Printed side of the notation reads (translated): “Each of you is showing me today, The very best side of themselves. And dear ones from near and far, Have written touching words to me. And presented me with everything, Only a gourmet could think of. Anything that might be pleasing To a man getting on in years. Everyone is approaching with sweet tunes, Just to make my day more beautiful. Even the countless cheapskates among them, Are designating their lyric poems to me. Giving me feelings of exaltation, Like the proud eagle has. As the day is drawing to an end, I shall hasten to give you my compliments. You all did very well, And our dear sun keeps on smiling.” In fine condition, with small spot of staining to the right edge (easily matted out if so desired), as well as several spots to printed side. Upon reaching his 50th year, Einstein here exhibits a profound understanding of aging. He had expressed a desire to let his birthday pass without notice, yet the press hounded him as the date approached. Rather than partake of a celebration he chose to sneak away and spend time alone in the country, then returned home to dinner with his wife and children. Even so, Einstein’s birthday garnered good wishes from across the world. His friends purchased him a sailboat, and Zionists in the United States purchased a plot of land in Palestine and planted it with trees in his honor. For all those who showed the great scientist “the very best side of themselves,” Einstein here expresses his gratitude for “giving me feelings of exaltation.”
