Striking 7.25 x 9 profile photo of Einstein on its original 8.25 x 11 mount, signed on the image in ink by the photographer “Tycko, L.A.” and signed and inscribed on the mount by Einstein, “To Mr. Tycko, Albert Einstein, 1932.” Cloth matted and framed with a calligraphic quotation to an overall size of 17.75 x 28.75. Little has been documented of Tycko’s photography career, though he is known to have photographed a number of entertainment personalities in the Los Angeles area in the early decades of the 20th century. More startling, however, is his reported role in pegging Einstein as a Communist, as described in the 1993 book The Einstein File: J. Edgar Hoover’s Secret War Against the World’s Most Famous Scientist by Fred Jerome. In a characteristic display of paranoia, infamous FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover instituted a massive effort to collect “derogatory information” on Einstein from the time of the scientist’s permanent residence in America in 1933 until his death in 1955. According to an informant in the film industry (whose reliability, it must be added, was called into question), Tycko once described Einstein as “the brain that was setting up Hollywood in the 1930s for the big Communist push...He was one of the most dangerous and powerful figures in what has become the Communist movement.” Mild silvering to perimeter of image, otherwise fine, clean condition. A splendid example with a most unusual association! Oversized. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
