TLS signed “A. Einstein,” one page, 8.5 x 11, Institute for Advanced Study letterhead, September 13, 1950. A brief but humble letter to Michel de Bry in Paris. In full: “Thank you for your letter of August 21st. I have a deep admiration for Vivaldi’s greatness. It is the admiration of an amateur and I feel I have no right to say anything in public about these masterworks.” In very good condition, with intersecting folds, toning, light soiling, and small pencil notations to top edge, a couple rusty paperclip impressions to lower left, and some scattered light creases. Einstein’s signature is crisp and unaffected by any of the flaws. The key word “Amateur” has been circled in ballpoint in an unknown hand, presumably Bry’s.

Many physicists have been fascinated by the violin and found relaxation and fulfillment in playing that specific instrument. Of these great-minded men, the most famous is Einstein. His violin rarely left his side and he played it often, at an accomplished level, throughout his life, saying that "life without playing music is inconceivable to me.” Surprising, with all of his theories, that Einstein would decline to render an opinion on Vivaldi’s works.
