TLS signed “A. Einstein,” one page, 8.5 x 11, Emergency Committee of Atomic Scientists letterhead, July 22, 1948. Letter to William Adams Delano. In full: “On behalf of all the members of this Committee I send you sincere thanks for your generous gift. It is the support of men and women like yourself that makes possible our efforts for peace. We must realize that now, more than ever, the responsibility for insisting on a peaceful solution of the grave international crisis rests with thoughtful citizens in this nation and abroad. My colleagues and I welcome your cooperation in our campaign of education to this end.” Somewhat irregular toning to blank bottom portion and right side, lightly passing through portions of text and signature, and a staple hole to top left, otherwise fine condition.
Delano was a member of a prominent Massachusetts family as well as a highly successful architect whose firm designed homes and business for an elite clientele in New York City and Long Island. The wealthy businessman clearly supported the efforts of the the Emergency Committee of Atomic Scientists to educate the public about the dangers of atomic warfare. As its chairman, Einstein was committed to the organization’s efforts to seek a lifetime of world peace. To that end, in the years following World War II, the famed physicist and all of the committee members were thankful for like-minded individuals who believed that “a peaceful solution of the grave international crisis rests with thoughtful citizens in this nation and abroad.”
