Vintage matte-finish 6.5 x 8.75 studio photo of a very well-dressed Einstein, affixed to a 9.75 x 12.75 mount and signed in ink, “Albert Einstein,” on the mount; he has added an indecipherable sentiment beneath his name, and the mount is also signed in pencil by the photographer. In good condition, with mild staining, soiling, tiny chips to the emulsion, silvering to the image, and a small stain and some scratching to the facial area. Einstein’s full signature is quite light but still discernible. The mount exhibits moderate soiling and staining, creasing, edge wear and several small holes and is in turn affixed to a slightly larger mount.

This image was taken around 1922, the same year that Einstein participated in a six-month excursion and speaking tour of Asia—where he gave a four-hour lecture in Tokyo and met with the emperor and empress at the Imperial Palace where thousands came to watch—before concluding his journey in Palestine for a 12-day visit. Despite its numerous flaws, this remarkable image could be trimmed or matted to produce a rather striking display.
