Superb signed copy of Hermann Landshoff's visually stunning image of Einstein.Vintage 5 x 7 close-up photo of Einstein in his library, originally taken by the famous New York photographer Herman Landshoff circa 1945, inscribed in the lower border in black ink in German and signed “A. Einstein 1946.” In very good condition, with scattered creases, a couple lightly affecting a few letters of inscription, bends to corners, silvering to top area of image above Einstein’s head, a bit of light border soiling, and a trivial brush to date.

Landshoff, a German-born photographer, worked in Paris prior to World War II and moved to the United States in 1941, where he worked for such magazines as Junior Bazaar and Mademoiselle. However, his portfolio was not limited to such pursuits, as he also produced portraits of several intellectual and creative individuals of the day. Among those was Einstein, whose faraway and pensive gaze and wrinkled skin are further enhanced by the presence of his signature. This photo would go on to be the inspiration for engraver Bradbury Thompson who created the Einstein commemorative United States postage stamp honoring Einstein’s 100th birthday.
