A hand typed letter from Albert Einstein, on embossed headed paper 112, Mercer Street, Princeton, New Jersey, U.S.A. measuring approximately 8½" x 11".
The letter, dated October 16, 1954, reads in full:
"Dear Mr Lamont
I find it very meritorious indeed that you are prepared to give such a considerable sum of money for such an important cause. On the other hand , however, I do not feel able to assume moral responsibility for this enterprise in the form planned by you.
In my opinion such an undertaking should be the rallying point for all those who are willing to protect the civil rights - as far as this is still possible under the prevailing circumstances - against infringement and assault by the authorities. This can be successful only if a number of known and respected citizens are willing to participate actively and to assume common responsibility for the use of the funds. There should not be one mans's rule. Only in this way can such an enterprise have a salutary political effect.
Yours very sincerely,
Albert Einstein"
Einstein has signed the bottom of the letter in black ink 'A. Einstein'.
Corliss Lamont (March 28, 1902 "“ April 26, 1995), was a socialist philosopher, and advocate of various left-wing and civil liberties causes. As a part of his political activities he was the Chairman of National Council of American-Soviet Friendship starting from early 1940s.
