Exceptional vintage matte-finish 6.5 x 10 gelatin silver print of Einstein by Herman Mishkin, neatly signed in full in the lower border in fountain pen, "Albert Einstein, Mai 1921." Matted to an overall size of 9 x 12. In fine condition, with some light silvering and fingerprint impressions to the image; the signature, apparently written in sepia ink, is somewhat light in tone but fully legible.

A superb photograph of Einstein, taken by a noted New York City photographer during Einstein’s first tour of the United States. We have been unable to locate any other copy—let alone a signed copy—of this image, and the present is perhaps the unique surviving exemplar. Mishkin was a noted photographer of Broadway and opera celebrities. The present photograph is a handsome and striking portrait of the genius, capturing a vigorous looking Einstein with an exceedingly strong shock of hair. Einstein photographs of such early date are very rare. Einstein would be awarded the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics 'for his services to Theoretical Physics, and especially for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect.'
